New Human Rights Center Opens in East El Paso
(EL PASO, Texas) – Almost 14 years ago, community organizers of the Border Network for Human Rights began organizing people in the Montana Vista area of El Paso.
On Saturday, August 18, BNHR members will celebrate the opening of The Laura Aguilar Human Rights Community Center, located at 3671 Fawn Dr. in East El Paso.
The center is the third regional community organizing center operated by BNHR members. The other two are in central El Paso and in Anthony, New Mexico.
BNHR members work together to install the ceiling in the Laura Aguilar Human Rights Community Center in the Montana Vista area of East El Paso. The community worked for months to build the center from the ground up.
The center will be a place for human rights committees to meet and discuss human and constitutional rights. “Having our own center here, close to where we are organizing people, makes all the difference,” said the center’s director, Gabriela Castaneda. “We will be able to grow and reach more people to learn about what are their human rights.”
State Sen. Jose Rodriguez will be there to cut the ribbon at 5 p.m. County Commissioner Tania Chozet, and a representative from the office of Mary Gonzalez, who will represent residents in the area in the next session of the Texas legislature, will also be there to celebrate. A representative from the El Paso Sector of the Border Patrol will also attend the ribbon cutting.
In addition to human rights committee meetings, the center will offer English classes and other events for BNHR members.
